Tasting Notes

Colares is a small appellation northwest of Lisbon and one of Portugal's oldest. Planted entirely in sand, the vines growing there are ungrafted, and very, very old. The red grape of Colares is Ramisco, which grows nowhere else in the world. This expression from Viuva Gomes is rare and remarkable.

Colares was the second certified wine region in Portugal but now is mostly forgotten for the better known Douro and Dão. Romisco is the grape which I found to be akin to Cabernet Franc from Loire or Mencia from Spain. Light in body but complex and textural with firm( but not big ) tannins and a bright acidity. Berried fruit on the nose give way to some spice and earth on the palate. The proximity of the vineyards to the ocean gives this wine a briney quality that would make it a great red wine to pair with seafood.

They also show their terroir quite clearly, and represent a great alternative to the modern fruit-driven...
