Iqhilika, African Coffee Mead

Item # 35160 750mL

(eek-uh-lee-kuh). South African mead brewed with local roasted coffee beans. Unlike any other mead we've come across, this is incredibly complex with exotic aromas of honey and coffee and tangy sweet citrus flavors on the palate.

Staff Pick Notes

Despite mead's tired associations with Vikings, Africa has some of the most vibrant contemporary mead-drinking cultures. Where European meads are produced commercially in small quantities as something of a novelty, in Africa mead is widely produced and consumed locally from wild-foraged honey rich in pollen and microbial debris perfect for fermentation. Makana is one of the few African meaderies marketing mead abroad, and we're better off for it. So are the bees! The company has been recognized for its extensive beekeeping program, fostering both biodiversity and employment in the Eastern Cape. This mead is relatively dry and light; not sticky, heavy, or cloyingly sweet at all. The addition of roasted coffee beans imparts a mild flavor, bitterness, and acidity to balance the sweetness of the honey without being overpowering. Delicious!
