Tasting Notes

A young Banyuls with dense plum and blackberry flavors. Dark chocolatey tannins will smooth into velvet as this fortified wine ages. Enjoy with gorgonzola, chocolate and red fruit desserts.

Banyuls is a French AOC for fortified apéritif or dessert wine made from old vines cultivated on terraced slopes of the Catalan Pyrenees in the Roussillon county of France, bordering the Empordà wine region in Catalonia in Spain. Made from old-vine Grenache with a lick of Carignan and fortified by mutage to 16.5 percent, this wine is wonderfully fruity, with cassis and blueberry in the ascendant. Banyuls provides a rich, silky backdrop and highlights the fruity notes in the chocolate without ever becoming cloying. To improve upon this pairing further, add a fluffy cow's milk blue cheese.
