Staff Pick Notes

Yohan Lardy is the fifth generation in his family to grow wine in the Beaujolais. He aquired his estate in the mid-2000s from the winemaking family that planted this vineyard of 120 year-old Vielles Vignes (Old Vine) Gamay in 1903. This micro-plot of barely 2.5 acres is the treasure of Yohan's estate. The magic in these old vines comes from untrellised vines planted in a loose soil composed of manganese rich pink granite. All grapes are harvested by hand and vinified as whole clusters with native yeasts. Finally resting 12 months in 80yr old, 3,000L Foudres to balance the fruit and tannin. This is the profile that continues to captivate my pallet in Beaujolais. While medium bodied, there is a powerful structure and dense, supple tannin. A bouquet of black currant and wild raspberry fruit prevail. An irresistible and unforgettable glass.

Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....

Beaujolais-Villages is a step up. Compared to basic Beaujolais, the rules for Beaujolais-Villages wines are more strict. Villages wine is produced in far smaller quantities. Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
