It seems as though Portuguese wines are still mysterious to American wine lovers, but there is nothing to fear in trying an unfamiliar wine. Filipa Pato's dedication to showcasing the native grapes of Portugal shows in this fantastic example of Bical. This white wine demonstrates solid weight, firm texture, and well balanced acidity. It's a natural cross over for lovers of fuller bodied Chardonnay, and easier on the wallet than many white Burgundies or California wines. Teamed with pork chops and black truffle butter, forbidden rice, and bok choy, this turned an easy going Sunday night supper into a delightful pairing surprise!

Bical

Don't get the wrong idea, but the other name for Bical is Borrado das Moscas, which can most politely be translated as "fly droppings." It's not based on the aroma or taste of this pleasant white Portuguese variety, however (it's most likely a reference to the grapes' small size, or the tiny specks on the grape skins). Bical is grown in Bairrada and Dao, and is often added to sparkling wine blends, though there are a few varietals out there too.
