Tasting Notes

One of the least-explored areas of Burgundy is in the Côte Chalonnaise in the south of the region. The comes from the village of Montagny and is a white Burgundy made from older vines of Chardonnay. The Le Clou vineyard is located on the southern end of the appellation and varies in elevation from 250-400 m. The soils are full of red, grey clay alongside the requisite limestone.

This Montagny "Le Clou" from Domaine de Clos Salomon is everything that I love about white Burgundy. From the beautiful, rich texture to the aroma and palette, this wine seriously delivers. Chardonnay is made all over the place, but I think that it shows best in Burgundy, its homeland. From old vine Chardonnay in Montagny, in the Côte Chalonnaise, this under the radar appellation is home to both fantastic wines and great value. Chardonnay is the only grape permitted to be sold under the Montagny name, so they know what they are doing. The climate is cooler and produces higher acid wine that go extremely well with foods. Pair with poultry, creamy sauces, and rich cheeses. Sublime!
