Item # 37720 750mL

A silky Bordelais-like red wine from legendary Lebanese produce Ch. Musar. Made from 30 year old vines, this is often known as the "second wine" from Ch. Musar. Dark red and black fruits feel like velvet on the palate. There is a fine minerality and elegance with the lingering finish. Pair with rack of lamb or wild boar.

Staff Pick Notes

I realized the other day that a lot of the time if someone walks in looking for a classically-styled Bordeaux and they talk to me, they walk out with a great bottle from Lebanon instead. That comparison in mind, the Hochar is sometimes described as a second label to the Chateau Musar wines. Really, it has its own identity. Cinsault dominant, with a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon, it trades out the Carignan found in the big wines for a healthy dose of Grenache. While the influence here feels left bank to me, Bekaa Valley wines are their own thing, especially in vitality and freshness. The Hochar drinks balsamic and cedary, with roasted herbs, gravel, and dark coffee grounds atop a cushion of black cherry and pomegranate. Tannin and alcohol levels are both restrained, so the wine will drink as well with richly flavored fish as hearty roasts.

About the Producer

Bekaa Valley, Lebanon Chateau Musar was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, although since 1959 it has been run by his two sons Serge and Ronald. Serge Hochar is the more charismatic of the two, finding time to travel the world to promoting the Musar name at tastings, seminars and similar events, while also maintaining winemaking responsibilities. Ronald, a lawyer by profession, looks after the...

Glossary

Grenache

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

Carignan

Grown all over Europe and the Americas, Carignan (a.k.a. Carignane, Carignano, and Cariñena) is seldom seen as a 100% varietal wine. Many appellations of Languedoc-Roussillon must include a certain percentage of Carignan, but it is rarely the dominant grape in these blends. For years, this naturally high-yielding grape suffered from overproduction, but New World winemakers have lately taken up the Carignan cause and produced some distinctive and delicious examples. Now that it is subject to...

Cabernet Sauvignon

The result of an illicit affair a hundred-odd years ago between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon today enjoys more worldwide popularity than both of its parents combined. It is the principal grape of Bordeaux, and as such has rightly earned its place among the greatest and most long-lived wines of the Old World; of course, it is also the most heralded grape of California, positioning it at the forefront of the New World wine scene as well. Today, Cabernet Sauvignon has a...
