Staff Pick Notes

I had the pleasure of meeting Alexandre Chartogne one Halloween night, getting bewilderingly served so many of his wines while he donned a pink wig like an 80s pop star. I was floored. While all his wines are dedicated to single parcels primarily planted to single varietals, Alexandre really trys to highlight soil and place, emphasized by farming organically (with no use of chemicals or herbicides) and ploughing the land with horses he owns. All fermentation and élevage takes place in oak and he is malo-friendly with his sparklers. The Chemin de Reims is 100% Chardonnay: lean and ethereal with notes of spearmint, apple crisps, lightly toasted lemon zest, and dried white florals, with a backbone of acidity that really lifts the wine; very classic yet brimming with personality.

It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
