Staff Pick Notes

It's always good to remember that wines are living things, ever changing in the bottle over the course of months, even weeks. When this bottle first arrived, it was shut down, closed, tight, its fruit overly taught and slightly bitter. But what a difference a little time makes. In fact, it's hard to believe this is the same wine. In the last couple of months its defenses have come down, the fruit has opened up and all the nuances are starting to shine through. There are gorgeous apple aromas and a hint of petrol. Stone fruits follow through on the palate along with a firm base of stony minerality, reflecting the ancient Devonian slate on which these grapes were grown. It is bone dry, refreshing, a great food wine, as most rieslings are, but really, this wine is just getting started. I, for one, will be tasting it time and time again.

They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
