Staff Pick Notes

Alsace is a unique place for sure. Its identity straddles two very different worlds, yet remains very much its own. The food, the language, the people, and wines they produce all remain extraordinary and distinctive. Culling from both German and French influences, Alsace remains apart. Laurent Barth has worked all over the world-Lebanon, Australia, South Africa, India, and the United States-producing wines with a litany of winemakers. He brought this experience and knowledge home, taking over his father's estate in 1999. This is textbook Alsatian Gewürztraminer, rich, intensely aromatic, off-dry, and not for the faint of heart. If you've ever sat by a canal in Strasbourg's La Petite France neighborhood sipping local wines out of a green-stemmed glass, or wanted to, this will transport you.

The pink-skinned Gewürztraminer does best in cooler climates,...
