Jolie-Laide, Trousseau Gris - 2022

Item # 39520 750mL

Some skin contact lends an incandescent, roseate hue, breadth of palate and subtle tannin. The aromas are light and pretty, wildly floral yet savory. Stone fruit, white strawberry and white tea flavors on the palate. Jolie-Laide is a one-man operation based in a Sebastopol winery where winemaker Scott Schultz makes only 500 cases of wine a year under his own label. The name Jolie-Laide translates loosely to “Pretty-Ugly”, a French term of endearment to describe something that is unconventionally beautiful. This label is designed Kate Scott.

Staff Pick Notes

After spending a few years in Napa’s wine world, Scott Schultz made his own Jolie Laide label in 2010. He decided that there wasn't room for more Cabs and Chards and that he would focus on uncommon (in California) varietals as Melon de Bourgogne, Valdiguie, and Gamay. Although not a vine grower, he only works with organic farmers. Schultz shows a deft touch with this Trousseau Gris. Whole clusters are foot stomped, then left on the skins for a few days. The wine shows a light golden color with pink edges. It smells of citrus, apples, ground almonds, and fresh herbs. The palate is soft and smooth, with an olive oil viscosity. It’s a wine full of subtlety and nuance and would go beautifully with a wedge of Camembert.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
