Tasting Notes

There are handful of rare red grape varieties grown in the Rías Baixas region of Spain which is best known for its Albariño. This is made from Caiño that's grown on granitic soils, hand harvested and then fermented whole cluster in open top old barrels. Pale red in color and reminiscent of an Alpine red wine. Vibrant red fruits and mineral. The acidity is boon at the table.

Are chilled reds your jam? if so, then don't miss the wine boat by skipping over this one. At first glance it may seem a bit spendy, but once you've tasted this lovely Caiño Tinto you'll be hooked like me. I was drawn to the bottle because I love the red wines of northern Spain & this did not disappoint. I was also intrigued by the grape itself, a local indigenous variety from the Val do Salnés in Rías Baixas. This sub-region hugs the coastline of Spain, offering a milder Atlantic influenced climate with substantial rainfall. The soils are primarily granitic & the farming practices of the Zarate estate loosely incorporate biodynamic principles. Dark fruit flavors of plum skins and blackberries dominate, & the lack of tannic structure is what works so well at cooler temperatures. Pair with Iberico ham, a tortilla, friends & fun.

Zarate is a family-owned estate located in the Village of Meano, found in the heart of the Salnez Valley, which is a part of the Spanish Rias-Baixas Denominacion de Origen.
