Tushpa, Reserve Red, Ararat Valley - 2015

Item # 40964 750mL

Made from the Haghtanak grape (translates into victory). It is a relatively modern cross between other Armenian grapes and Saperavi. The wine is deeply colored and has layers of red and black fruit with silky tannins. Aged in barrel for 14 months. The Tuspha label is a tribute to the history of the Manasserian family who made wine in the village of Tushpa (in what is now Turkey).

Staff Pick Notes

Situated in the beautiful Ararat Valley, Tushpa Winery sits almost in the shadows of Mount Ararat. There are actually two peaks I learned, Greater Ararat and Little Ararat, which are both part of a dormant volcano. The dramatic scenery is the perfect setting for the Manasserian family's viticultural operation, which has been around since 1992. This Haghtanak wine is fermented in traditional amphorae called karasi, then aged in oak barrels for 14 months. This is a full-bodied, spicy, and delicious wine. I enjoyed a glass with some savory local cheeses and Armenia's legendary produce, but would perfectly accompany some stewed lamb with bulgur. As I left the winery I was gifted the family matriarch's homemade apricot jam. Shnorhakalutyun!
