Staff Pick Notes

There are two spectrums of natural winemakers it seems to me: very jolly and exuberant vs the austere and rigid to the point of extremism. Sam Vinciullio is certainly the latter, having returned from his time with Frank Cornelissen in Sicily, dedicated to an anti-sulfur regiment on his leased vineyards. Vinciullio is meticulous about his process, doing everything by himself and unwilling to compromise for his beliefs. This Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz blend is unconventional for sure but shows resolve and discipline in his winemaking. Aromas of rose petals, jalapeno peppers and wild crunchy strawberries provide freshness while flavors of sour cherry, black pepper, wet slate emphasize the unwavering honesty of Sam’s grapes. This glossy scarlet wine may be the work of uncompromising beliefs but it’s delicious all the same.

Glossary

Shiraz

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...

Australia

Australian Shiraz (made from the grape called “Syrah” in other parts of the world) shows the essence of the outback: it’s big, bold, and a little rough around the edges. The vast country leaves lots of room for variation, however, with its many terroirs each yielding distinctively styled wines. The climate of South Australia’s McLaren Vale district is heavily influenced by the ocean; wines here typically show savory notes of olive and spice on the nose and deep berry flavors on the palate....

Western Australia

The state of Western Australia has a uniquely moderate maritime climate. With fairly consistent year-round temperatures and moderate rainfall, the climate is well suited to the Bordeaux grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The soil here tends to be gravelly or gritty loam, offering excellent drainage, though poor water retention means that frequent irrigation may be required. The Shiraz form Margaret River faithfully reflects its microclimate, yielding medium-bodied, spicy, peppery...
