Staff Pick Notes

A Champagne with energy and precision from ninth generation grower Mouzon-Leroux. It's also a pure expression of the Verzy Grand Cru in Montagne de Reims. Located mid-slope on this great hill the soils are a wildly diverse collage of chalk, clay and flint. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape on these north facing vines, which gives the wine bracing acidity."L'Atavique Tradition" is aged for three years in a combination of oak and stainless steel giving it subtle complexity. It's youthful and buoyant when you pop the cork. The palate tickles with tart citrus fruits, sour dough and smarties candies. Grower producers like this are unbelievable quality for the price. No box or marketing necessary. Besides, it's more fun to taste what the little houses are up to in this iconic and ever-changing region.

Glossary

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

These winemakers control every aspect of grape cultivation and vinification, from the vine to the finished bottle, which is...

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
