Staff Pick Notes

I just tried a bunch of wines from Ochota Barrels and I'm pretty impressed. For the past 15 years, punk rock bassist turned winemaker Teras Ochota has been crafting natural wines in South Australia that burst with flavor and creativity. The standout for me is the Mark of Cain, made from 100% Pinot Meunier. Named for an Australian hard rock group (who incidentally remind me a lot of Rollins Band), the wine is fruity, floral, and uniquely delicious, with notes of hibiscus, rose petals, and red and dark berries. Remarkable depth and real pretty in the glass as well. The Ochota wines are highly sought after and these are unlikely to last long on our shelves. My advice? Grill up some chicken kebabs, put on some rockin' tunes, forget about the world and enjoy this tasty natural red while you still can.

Glossary

Australia

Australian Shiraz (made from the grape called “Syrah” in other parts of the world) shows the essence of the outback: it’s big, bold, and a little rough around the edges. The vast country leaves lots of room for variation, however, with its many terroirs each yielding distinctively styled wines. The climate of South Australia’s McLaren Vale district is heavily influenced by the ocean; wines here typically show savory notes of olive and spice on the nose and deep berry flavors on the palate....

South Australia

South Australia is home to nearly half the country's wine production as well as the center of premium Shiraz production. It contains the Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and Coonawarra regions.

Adelaide Hills

One of Australia's premier cool climate wine regions, the Adelaide Hills region is made up of a collection of sub-regions that roughly sit between the Barossa Valley in the north and McLaren Vale in the south. The high altitude and steep topography of the region exert cooling and humidifying effects, which, along with the highest rainfall in South Australia, contribute to a climate very conducive to leaner, more mineral-driven styles of wine.
