El Triangulo, Luis Perez - 2019

Item # 41584 750mL

This is a red wine from the Jerez region of Spain - best known for their fortified sherries. This is not fortified, is dry and is made from a local variety called Tintilla de Rota which once thrived in the region but is hardly even known today. This comes from a section of Jerez very near the ocean which cools the vines in this arid, warm region. This is a fresh red wine, not heavy, with a mineral core that is clearly linked to the classic albariza soils of the region.

Staff Pick Notes

The Jerez region in Spain most famous for producing Sherry wines is evolving as times and tastes change. Dry still reds and whites from traditional grape varieties are not to be missed for the adventurous. These are decidedly old-world wines that show tart fruits, spice, elevated acidities and minerality. Luis Perez's El Triangulo made from the Tintilla de Rota variety is a great entry here. Aromas of mint, licorice intertwined with fresh blueberry and blackberry and a little spice in the background greet the nose. On the palate there's a lot going on- the dark fruit notes have a wonderful pop and lift on the attack. There's also excellent lift and a mineral tension which really lends to a certain drinkability here. This is all framed with refreshing acidity that inhibits any palate fatigue and makes the wine excellent with food.

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Jerez

Sherry actually gets its name from our anglo-inability to pronounce the word “Jerez,” the town at the southern end of Spain in which the wine is produced. Like Champagne, Sherry can only be called Sherry if it comes from this specific region. That said, there are other “Sherry-styled” wines worthy of note produced outside of the Sherry D.O. (known as vinos generosos). Montilla, lying to the north-east of Jerez, produces some of the finest Pedro Ximénez in the world.
