Rosso di Toscana "Triassico", Montenidoli - 2010

Item # 41981 1.5L

The Triassico Tuscany red is made entirely from the Sangiovese grape in vineyards surrounded by the woods. The iron-rich, visibly red soils give this bold red a unique profile so much so that it's only bottled in magnum as it's meant for aging. This is a cellar release direct from the winery.

Staff Pick Notes

The first time I met Elisabetta Fagiuoli, she called herself the nurse of Montenidoli. Although equally intimidated & enthralled by her response, I loved her immediately. Several months later I visited her in the middle of harvest & she apologized for being busy, but she was helping give birth to the children of the vintage. I soon discovered, however that she's no mere mortal nurse, she’s a genuine earth-mother/goddess who’s wines are honest expressions of the lands surrounding the town of San Gimigano in Tuscany. The soils date to the Triassic period, and are an ancient seabed atop a mountain. This intense Sangiovese is genuinely worthy of serious study. Age it if you can, decant if you cave, like I did. If she had a favorite child, I suspect this cuvée might be it.

Sangiovese

Italy's most planted grape variety is at the heart of some of the most beloved wines in the country. Grown all over the region, but especially in Central Italy, Sangiovese is the only grape allowed in Brunello di Montalcino, and the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, and countless other delicious Italian blends. Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent complement to Cabernet Sauvignon in red Italian blends; this grape duo forms the basis of many of the...

Tuscany

When you think of Tuscan wine, think of Sangiovese, the grape that is common to most great Tuscan reds (Vernaccia is the only white wine made here). Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most complex expressions of Sangiovese, has the best aging potential. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows the softer side of the grape, containing up to 20% of other varieties. Young Chianti often smells of fresh fruit and herbs, while Chianti Classico Riserva can be dark and brooding. The term “Super Tuscans”...
