Despite a long history of grape growing (thanks to 16th c Spaniards) Mexico's modern winemaking industry didn't really develop until the 1970s. One of the early pioneers was Dr. Hans Backhoff who, along with 4 friends, founded Monte Xanic in 1987. Backhoff is from Ensenada (German fathee/Mexican mother) and earned his Ph.D. in Food Science, but his love was always wine. Monte Xanic is the native Cora phrase for “the first flower that blooms on the mountain after the rain," and describes what happens in the hills surrounding the Guadalupe Valley in Baja. High altitude gives this wine surprising structure, and although it is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (50% new) its presence is subtle. It's elegant and lighter bodied than you might expect, but concentrated with red fruits,black pepper, leather and chocolate.
