Spätburgunder "Handwerk", Julia Bertram - 2018

Item # 42477 750mL

The Ahr region, the smallest viticultural region in Germany, is a picturesque area flanked by steep vineyard-wrapped mountains. Best-known for their red wines, the majority of vines are planted to Pinot Noir, or Spätburgunder. This comes from old vines of massale planted vineyards which are abundant with cover crops, allowing for a more diverse biological composition of soil. After a 3 day cold soak, fermenation starts spontaneously in open wood and steel tanks. The Handwerk cuvée spends an additional 6 months aging in steel on the lees.

Staff Pick Notes

Light reds work wonders with food pairings. They're just right every time. Here's a particularly crisp red from the Ahr River Valley. It's one of Germany's smallest wine regions and the majority of its vines are planted to Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). It's an anomaly in white wine land. Obscure as it may be, it's a real find for cool-climate red wines. Julia Bertram comes from a family of winemakers here and shares in the enthusiasm. As she put it, “to grow up along the Ahr is to be infected early with the passion for Spätburgunder.” The "Handwerk" is sourced from younger vineyards in the Ahr Valley and is vinified with partial stem inclusion and aged in neutral oak. It's full of red berries and subtle spice atop forest floor and morels. Very slender with a sharp acidity. An elegant red for a cool evening.

Glossary

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Germany

German wines are some of the most jubilantly fruity bottles in the world. The country's Rieslings have been prized worldwide for centuries, yet they have never quite caught on in the U.S.: this no doubt due to Germany’s arcane system of wine classification. The most useful words to know on German wine labels are “Kabinett,” which indicates an outstanding everyday wine, and “trocken,” which means “dry.” As far as dessert wines go, a half-bottle of German Eiswein is so potent that you'll be able...
