Staff Pick Notes

An exciting find from Herrera Alvarado. This husband wife team are true pioneers of Chile's natural wine movement. Their vineyards are in the Marga Marga valley where wine making goes back five centuries. They integrate traditional practices into their collection of natural wines that are strikingly modern. This bottle is made from Sauvignon Blanc vines that are de-stemmed by using a tool called a 'zaranda' which gives the wine its name. After a two day maceration with the skins the wine is fermented with wild yeasts in concrete tanks, and aged for seventeen months on the lees. A lighter medium weight, with white peach, honey dew and citrus on the palate and a sharp acidity. This tension between traditional and modern results in a wine that is solidly individual.

Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
