Staff Pick Notes

The beauty of the Astor Staff Picks is that they're each written by a Sales Associate with no agenda other than sharing what that individual wine lover loves. Each one is signed and if you read enough you can start to really understand the tastes and personalities of each writer. If you've read enough of my picks, you'll know that I am a huge fan of boxed wine. I love its lower carbon footprint & how much easier it is to bring a single box home rather than four heavy glass bottles. I love how it can sit on my shelf for as long as it needs without going bad, especially as the days get colder and all I want to do is make Glühwein for one as I remain socially distanced. This Spanish blend of Monastrell and Tempranillo is delightful on its own, much lighter bodied than I'd expected and very fruit-forward. Wonderful when heated.

Monastrell

A Spanish synonym for the dark-skinned Mourvèdre grape.

The best bottles are powerful and ageworthy, and are beginning to fetch prices you'd never have expected from Spanish wines just a few years ago. Tempranillo is often used in blends with Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and has lately been grown with considerable success outside of Spain, in...
