Saumur-Champigny "L'Ile Quatre Sous," Ch. Yvonne - 2020

Item # 43589 750mL

The tasty red wine comes from a 1 hectare parcel of Cabernet Franc vines planted in a mixture of clay, sand and limestone soils. The age of the vines range from youthful 15 year old vines up to mid-century 50 year old vines. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in concrete vats for 8 months before bottling. Lively and robust on the palate with a purity of fruit that is distinct and lovely.

Staff Pick Notes

One of the most lauded producers in Saumur, Château Yvonne, has made waves with their expressive bottlings of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc over the last 15 years. Current winegrower Matthieu Vallée moved vineyard practices to biodynamics, and has adopted a minimal-intervention approach to winemaking, and the wines show an energy and vitality that reflects those decisions. 'L'Île de Quatre Sous' is the entry-level Cabernet Franc, drawn from a small block of vines aging 15 to 50 years, and aged in concrete. Fresh and light-bodied, but with rich concentration and a bounty of primary fruit with dashes of classic Cab Franc flavors of smoke and pepper. This is a food wine intended for young drinking, and I advise a good roast, French onion soup, or perhaps a meat-and-cheese conglomerate (I went with a deli chopped cheese) as pairings.

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Cabernet Franc has remained close to its roots in France, enjoying small pockets of popularity primarily in the Loire Valley (specifically in Chinon), where it is often bottled as a varietal wine, and in Bordeaux where it is still used in moderate percentages in the typical blends. In fact,...
