Bodegas Hornillos "Mibal" Joven, Ribera del Duero - 2021

Item # 43786 750mL

This bodega is one of the most artisanal producers in Ribera del Duero. In concept, neither a business nor a factory, this tiny garage is a place where raw material, selection and precision culminate in great wine making. Both descended from families of winemakers, Miguel Plates and Javier Ballesteros decided one day to unite their knowledge and passion for wine and grape in a project full of enthusiasm to produce quality wines.

Staff Pick Notes

Third-generation grape growers, Miguel Hornillos and Javier Ballesteros, own a combined 40 hectares in the surrounding areas of Roa and Burgos in the Ribera del Duero DO. Becoming faithful students of their parcels, the majority of their production is sold to top estates including Pago de los Cappellanes and Alion. After setting aside 10-15% of their harvest, they hand craft wines on the side of the road in a humble garage winery or "garagiste." The Mibal Ribera del Duero Joven is fermented in a conical, steel fermenter, which allows for a natural extraction and softer tannins. This wine sees zero oak usage and the result is an incredibly fresh wine with pure, concentrated, dark fruit of blackberries, ripe blueberries, and savory earth. This wine is made for your next backyard BBQ of pork ribs and burgers.

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. Spanish wine law focuses squarely on this issue: the terms Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are highly regulated indicators of the amount of time a wine has aged prior to its release. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Tempranillo

A.k.a. Cencibel. Just about synonymous with Spanish wine, the red Tempranillo grape has now fully won over the hearts and minds of critics and amateur oenophiles all over the world. The best bottles are powerful and ageworthy, and are beginning to fetch prices you'd never have expected from Spanish wines just a few years ago. Tempranillo is often used in blends with Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and has lately been grown with considerable success outside of Spain, in...

Ribera del Duero

This region is home to perhaps the most famed and acclaimed Spanish wine in history, the incomparable Vega Sicilia. Indeed for the better part of the twentieth century, Vega Sicilia was the single most expensive wine in Spain and, largely, the country’s major claim to fame on the international market. It wasn’t until 1972 that other winemakers began to creep into the region, but now the Ribera del Duero is home to a wealth of fabulous Tempranillo based wines that consistently garner critical...
