Staff Pick Notes

Ah, Chenin, easily one of the best white wine grapes for a winemaker to experiment with. It can take oak or retain residual sugar, be drunk fresh or age for decades. The grape has so much versatility and potential. Winemaker Ntsiki Biyela decided to start making a skin-contact wine with this grape and released her first vintage last year. Both years she has refined how she makes it, with the current vintage blending juice with various times on the skin. Some of the juice rested for 8 days to bring body, color, and a touch of tannin while the rest only sat on the skin overnight to bring fresh fruit. The result with this vintage is a complex, bright, and floral wine with some depth and the perfect weight on the palate. Pair with an afternoon nap in a hammock.

These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
