Staff Pick Notes

Wine ratings can be a contentious subject in the business. Who is to say that a wine in question is a 7 out of 10 or 98 points? It's just another person's opinion, right? If a hip hop artist wine rating system existed, I'd put this strongly between a Missy Elliott and a Cardi B. Why? Because it builds on tradition while being innovative and sassy at the same time. Plus, I love both of these artists for their unabashed yet unique style, just like this wine tastes. Skin contact, sure. But just the right amount to let the varieties shine. There's a lot of stone fruit action, ranging from apricot, to nectarine and white peach. Citrus also plays a part in the profile, but it's more like a slick, down tempo beat. This wine is so much fun to drink and keeps you coming back for more, like the ear worms of these artists. OKURRR!

Glossary

Grüner Veltliner

Referred to by many Americans as "Gru-Ve," this white variety is nearly synonymous with Austrian wine. It's becoming wildly popular at the moment, especially compared to its obscure origins: it's known as the ultimate food wine for its great minerality and appealing freshness. The wines are consistent and eminently drinkable at the low end, and, on the premium side of things, full-bodied, long-lived, world-class whites.

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
