Tasting Notes

This traditional field blend style is emblematic of Viennese winemaking, and has been produced here for centuries. This particular bottling comes from the Mauer district, and is a blend of Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder, and Traminer. All of these are co-fermented, and the wine spends some time on the skins for flavor and texture. Pair this light-bodied dry white with Liptauer cheese and good bread.

This wine glistens with aromatic realness! It is made in the typical Gemischter Satz style of Vienna so it is a field blend of grapes. In this case the vines are from Mauer, the southernmost neighborhood of the city's historic vineyard area. The blend changes a bit with each vintage, but generally includes Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc and Riesling among others. This type of wine reflects the unique character of these tiny plots. According to the team at Zahel "the character develops in the vineyard." What you taste on the palate is a beautiful punch that picks up bright notes from every grape ...honeysuckle, roses, pineapples, white pepper, candied limes, and yellow apples. It's off-dry, unctuous in texture and delightful all around. Pair this with spicy take-out.
