Penley Estate, "Francis", Cabernet Franc - 2021

From one of South Australia's most historic winemaking families, the Penley Estate proper was founded in 1988 but has more than 100 years history before that. This medium-bodied, dark-fruited Cabernet Franc has all of the variety's trademarks. A touch of oak spice, medium tannins, and pepper make for a quaffable and easy drinking dry red. Pair this with barbecued pork and charred spring onions.

From the Loire to the North Fork to Coonawara Australia, good folks are making scrumptious Cab Francs and I love them. This one, from winemaker Kate Goodman, is youthful, modern, vibrant, unoaked and driven by its fragrant fruit profile. Bursting with complex whole bunch characters of violets, sliced pepper, Turkish delight and spice, with a juicy palate of smooth yet cheeky tannins that support a core of intensely flavored fruit. Established in 1988 by the descendants of the pioneering Penfold (yep, those Penfolds) and Tolley families, Penley Estate is located in Coonawarra, the heart of one of South Australia’s greatest wine regions where the Terra Rossa soils were selected for their ability to produce terroir-driven wines of true regional character. The Estate is now widely regarded as one of the region’s leading producers.
