This dry red is a blend of Kékfrankos, Cabernet Sauvignon, Kadarka, Muscat, and Prokupac. From a Hungarian-speaking part of Northern Serbia, in the Suboticko– Horgoškoj region, this winery is in its 4th generation. Aged for 1 year in 500L used oak barrels, this is light and refreshing, but medium-bodied. Pair with sarma cabbage rolls.

If you've never tried natural wine from Serbia, here's your chance! As Serbia isn't a member of the EU, the challenges of exporting wine from the country are numerous. This is despite the fact it once contained the hottest wine regions for supplying the Roman empire with the stuff! Oskar Maurer is probably the best known Serbian winegrower outside of his country, a testament to his 30 years of making uncompromisingly natural wines. This Crazy Lud (goose) is a near equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Kekfrankos (Blaufrankisch), with a touch of the indigenous Kadarka. As a result, it is a heady wine, aromatic and oh so smooth, lower in alcohol than you might expect! I found notes of bing cherries, ruby red grapefruit, and black olives in the glass. The cork is sealed with soft clay from the vineyard - no special tools required to open!
