Frog's Leap Merlot - 2021

Item # 85884 750mL

A beautifully aromatic nose displays the character of Merlot at its very best. A very expressive nose opens with aromas of plum, dark cherries, cocoa and spice, filling the void where Pinot Noir is too simple and Cabernet Sauvignon too intense. With its definite bite of bright acidity, this is a great bottle to reach for when roasting chicken, braising veal shank or grilling some portobello mushrooms.

Staff Pick Notes

It has been about 10 years since the movie Sideways hit the big screen and Miles made his statement that a different grape was the only one to buy and drink. Well, now we can see how that turned out. Merlot has come back and this one is a good reason to try it again and savor its joy. It has bright fresh red berry fruit on the nose and the mid-palate and a long finish. Look for a little hint of white pepper that enhances the flavor. It is certainly a good food wine with medium body, good acid, and soft tannins. I enjoyed the Frog's Leap Rutherford Merlot with a Blanquette de Veau accompanied by a kale salad. It was a remarkable match. You will be rewarded, especially if this is your reintroduction to Merlot, and you will be buying American.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Merlot
