Amari are my favorite after-dinner sips, but during the summer I like to shift gears into something more refreshing--like an amaro affogato (aka an amaro float). Every amaro is different, so the possibilities of mixing and matching are endless. One amazing flavor combination is Averna amaro with espresso ice cream. Averna is one of Italy's classic bittersweet digestifs and is still made according to the original 1868 recipe. Although the exact ingredients remain a secret, it's a luxurious mix of flavors: caramel, orange zest, juniper, rosemary and anise. It's slightly sweeter and more plush, which makes it a wonderful complement to ice cream. Dessert could not be easier or more delicious.
