Luxardo Amaro Abano

Item # 16599 750mL

Amaro means bitter in Italian and this medium bitter is extremely popular in the Veneto region. Commonly used as a digestif after a meal. Sweet on the nose, very viscous and finishes with a citrus zest quality.

Staff Pick Notes

Recently I've been drinking my amaro hot. Sometimes served simply out of a nice, cozy mug with an orange peel expressed on top (I like to go 3.5oz hot water to 1.5oz amaro). Sometimes I add a shot to the base of my moka pot and make coffee with a split water/amaro base. But more to the point I've been trying it with as many different amari as I can to see what really works, and the Luxardo Abano is my go to. The flavor profile is darker, richer, nocturnal, with bitter orange and chocolate dominating at first, then cardamom, dried herbs, and a dramatic zing of cinnamon and black pepper. The bitterness is contained to the finish, and is pleasant and not overwhelming, just a bit on the sweeter side of amaro, which is what you want when serving it hot. To me it goes especially well with the flavors of a darker espresso roast.
