Tasting Notes

This Chinato is produced from the world famous Piemonte wine, Barolo, which is infused with quinine bark, rhubarb, and ginger. The aroma is filled with melon, orange rind and rhubarb. Gently spiced, the acidity made me hungry for antipasti and, while traditionally, this is enjoyed after a meal, I have no problem enjoying before or during one.

Staff Pick Notes

Barolo Chinato, born in Piedmont Italy last century, is a special wine produced with Barolo DOCG and is 100% Nebbiolo. The base wine is spiced using China Calissaja barks, gentian, rhubarb roots & valuable cardamon seeds. The gentian forming the major part of the bittering agent is a herbaceous perennial native to the mountains of southern Europe also a principal ingredient in Angostura Bitters. My first experience of Chinato and my word I really enjoyed it. The aromas amazing notes of whole grain mustard with background hints of herby sausage which develops into an inky fruit. The palate spiced fruit, rich orange notes and a great creamy bitter chocolate finish. Drink as an aperitif or after a meal. Also pairs very well with high cocoa desserts! Cheers Stephen W.
