High West Campfire: could a name be more intriguing? The word "campfire" stirs up great memories of trips with my family in East Africa to the Mara and Serengeti, with the sounds of coughing leopards and roaring lions in the not-too-far distance! Can this whiskey, a blend of 100-proof Bourbon, rye, and peated single malt Scotch from the Highlands, live up to its name? Yes, it can. Okay, it doesn't deliver on the wildlife! But the nose is wonderful, with corn, toffee, and a hint of maple, and as yet no real indication of smoke. The palate warms up with spicy vanilla and benchmark High West cherry fruit, and then, very gently on the finish, the smoke appears, almost like the morning mist floating over the crocodile-infested Mara River. This whiskey isn't just for the adventurous, though! It is approachable and delicious. Cheers, SW
