Tasting Notes

The first note comes off as a doughnut dusted with baking spice. Then hot cinnamon, raw cinnamon stick, pear cider, and cane sugar. The bouquet is rounded out with notes of whole clove. The pear cider is back on the palate along with more clean pear flavors. An overall excellent balance of sweet and spice.

Staff Pick Notes

If you browse through our spirits selections you will notice that we are big fans of St. George Spirits. Founded in 1982, it was actually the first small American distillery since Prohibition. Their wide array of spirits includes gin, whiskey, brandy, vodka, and lest I forget, mind blowing fruit liqueur. My favorite in the chilly months is the Spiced Pear. Organic, dry-farmed Bartlett pears are distilled into St. George's brandy (also worth exploring) and then luscious juice from the pears and spices are added generously. Cinnamon and clove are the most apparent, but to me this sings of the whole ground spice cabinet. The result is rich in texture and flavor, but never cloying. An easy addition to any whiskey cocktail, a lovely fall/winter aperitif when splashed into bubbly,or wait until the main course of duck, pork or turkey!

Astor's Glossary of Terms

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
