Made from a low rye mash bill, the same as Wathen's Single Barrel whose namesake Wathen Medley was one of the founders of this 1950s brand, Medley brothers is a high-proof classic that is well-priced and well-situated to be a solid standby for rocks and cocktail drinking. The round nose with plenty of wood and caramel leads to sweet flavors of maple, crushed apples, and baking spice. Great value.

One of Kentucky’s last family-owned independent bourbon producers, Charles Medley Distillery has been producing this exact recipe—a punchy, spicy, 102-proof whiskey with a high-corn mash—since the 1940s. I prefer bourbon over rye in my stirred whiskey cocktails, and appreciate a bourbon over ice enjoyed to a point of heavy dilution. If you’re anything like me, Medley Brothers should definitely be in your regular rotation. It sings in those applications and definitely overdelivers for its price. Sugar and ice in a classic old fashioned fattens it out delectably. Play with different bitters (Angostura, Bitter Truth aromatic bitters, Bogart’s bitters, etc; with Regan’s orange) to discover what this affordable and versatile whiskey can do.
