Tasting Notes

The crown jewel of the current releases from La Venenosa is the Raicilla produced by Maestro Tabenero Don Luis Contreras exclusively from wild foraged Inaequidens agave found in the coniferous forests of the Sierra del Tigre near the village of Manzanilla de la Paz, 2,000 meters above sea level. After harvest, the plants are roasted over burning wood in an earthen oven. Distillation is in a Filipino ceramic still and Don Luis limits production to 700 liters per year. Notes include sour beer, pickled beets, vanilla custard, rose petals, and pine trees.

Staff Pick Notes

The unadventurous need not apply. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, this Raicilla is a treat, with quite a few twist! Just when you thought agave spirits couldn't get more bizarre and fascinating La Venenosa tries to further push the boundaries and give us interesting and uber traditional spirits to both contemplate and enjoy. A strange, funky, savory, herbal, rustic nose followed by a rich, sweet, creamy, fruity, and yes a little funky palate. "To the bold go the spoils!!!"
