Tasting Notes

After over a century of pursuing whisky and over half a century making it, Mars Shinshu is finally making its debut stateside. The Tradition is a malt-heavy blend that goes through a three barrel regimen, maturing in a combination of used bourbon, Sherry, and wine casks before being married. The malt and Sherry influences jump out of the glass while subtle notes of earth, fruit, and spice are revealed over time. Notes include smokestack, roasted grains, firewood, dried nuts, caramel, fruit tarts, and more.

Staff Pick Notes

The Japanese whiskey marketing machine has been unleashed in the past few years. All in all, it's a good thing, but it has had two consequences: 1) Smaller brands with well-made products can raise their own profile and ride the rising tide. 2) The bigger names are now out of reach. This elegant spirit from independently owned Shinsu Mars distillery is an example of the former. The red, coppery liquid displays red fruit, figs, and a variety of spices from its triple cask. The cask regimen of bourbon, red wine and Sherry barrels are balanced and well-integrated with soft, local water. This is a hard-to-find product line and the price can't be beat. We also carry the standard Iwai entry-level expression, which would appeal to bourbon drinkers. Two bottles of singular Japanese whiskey at under $100... get them while you can.
