Tasting Notes

Originally produced in 1903 by the Glenmore Distilling Company in Kentucky, this straight four-year-old whiskey is now owned by Sazerac and is being produced at the Sazerac controlled Barton Distillery where many other of its great stable of Kentucky whiskies are made including 1792 Small Batch. Kentucky Tavern falls into the category of old school value bourbon that over delivers for the quality and taste. At this price, it is a no-brainer to always have on-hand when it is available. Resources have become scarce of late. Notes include melted butter, rum raisin ice cream, caramel apple, fresh grains, black pepper, and spicy oak.

Staff Pick Notes

Today, big name bourbons are hunted down and snatched up like grand cru Burgundies. Because of this foam-at-the mouth fervor, people see inexpensive bourbon and doubt its quality. However, quality inexpensive whiskey has been around long before big businesses could hoodwink us with swill behind eye-catching labels, some of it has stood the test of time, and Kentucky Tavern is one of them. This bourbon has a nice evolution from fruity to spicy. It starts with golden raisins, candied green bananas, then smoothly transitions to crushed vanilla, chocolate fudge, and finishes with a crescendo of rye and wood spice. If you add some room temperature water you’ll bring out some mint on the finish. This whiskey is definitely worth breaking a twenty.
