San Luis Del Rio is at the epicenter of espadin production in Oaxaca. Here due to the extreme shifts in elevation and intense heat, the agaves ripen to astounding levels much quicker than elsewhere making for mezcals full of sweet nectar like agave flavors balanced by a smoky intensity. Notes here include bitter melon, coconut water, verbena, honey water, kiwi, and bright acidity on the earthy finish.

Mezcal is such a wild category, both in terms of price and style. Sure there are spectacular bottles at $150 or more, but you can dip your toe in the water without compromising quality. The Nuestra Soledad expression from the Village of San Luis Del Rio is a fantastic entry into the category. Yes, there's some smoke, as is to be expected, but it's milder than others and well integrated into the spirit. It melds with earthy, herbals aromatics and minerally quality. It is immediate, approachable and nicely chewy on the palate. It evolved nicely (grassy notes, fresh fruit, clay) over the course of a half hour in my glass.
