Tasting Notes

The great Don Valente Garcia offers premium traditional mezcals at values that seem too good to be true. Yes mezcal is rare by nature and on average pricier than most categories and yes it is also worth it. But when you can get great quality at an especially good price, you shouldn't pass it up. Notes include grilled fruits, sweet almond, lilacs, wet stones, lime and black peppercorn.

Staff Pick Notes

If you've want to step up your mezcal game, but aren't quite convinced it's worth the high prices some can command, this is the bottle to try. A lot of entry-level mezcals (~$30-50) are defined by their smokiness, but good mezcal in general should not be dominated by that campfire flavor. Smoke masks what's underneath, which in this case is the unique agave and terroir-- everything the budding connisseur is after. The Alipus San Andres is particularly expressive, sweet and creamy in a way I've only tasted from bottles at least twice the price. It's almost like cake batter. The smoke stays in the background acting as the fixative that keeps the rich flavor from getting cloying or boring. You'll want to keep sipping.
