The smoke is there at first but ultimately it plays a background role to the gorgeous fruit driven aromas of lime rind, banana, to the more tropical presence of star fruit and papaya. Very terroir driven, as all good mezcal should be, the beautiful integration of elements on the palate are accented by peppery flavors that waken the senses.

Staff Pick Notes

Banhez is my favorite new Mezcal for multiple reasons. 1. This is a blend of Espadin with 10% Barril Agave. Barrel is a taller, stalkier variety of Agave, often taking 15 or more years to mature. 2. The nose on this is much fruitier and juicier than many Mezcals, accented by wisps of smoke. Tropical fruit notes remain dominate on the palate, but are supported by citrus and herbal qualities. The smokiness remains in the background, which really allows the Agave to shine through. A long finish is a surprise ending! 3. It easily bridges the gap between a sipper and a cocktail ingredient. Multi-functionality is always a plus. 4. You can't beat the quality to price ratio this bottle offers. 5. If you are new to Mezcal, this is a great place to dive in to the category!
