Maltwine spirits have a tradition and history that dates back centuries and for the better part of the 19th century this particular spirit was one of the most prized and consumed the world over. Made from a mixed rye and barley mash the is triple distilled, the single malt spirit is then blended with juniper and Brambling hops. Notes of fresh baked bread mix with notes of pepper, lemon, fresh herbs and almonds. The texture is supple on the entry and lively and mouth-watering on the finish. This is a much needed and welcomed breath of fresh air for this category.

Genever is the traditional spirit of the Netherlands, made by distilling maltwine. While often referred to as Dutch gin, I find it to have a character all its own. I was introduced to the spirit on a trip to Amsterdam and each occasion I get to revisit the spirit is a real treat. This bottle is no exception. The Old Duff Single Malt Genever is the epitome of restrained clear spirit excellence. Its as if a gentle grappa and a smooth British Gin hooked up: discreet notes of juniper weave in and out of dried citrus, subtle star anise, and a light dash of white pepper. Clean and delightful to sip neat, either chilled or at room temperature. Currently only available stateside, so treat yourself to something new and deliciously different.
