Part of Under Armour founder Kevin Plank's mission to bring back Maryland's prestige as a premier producer of American Whiskey, particulary rye, the initial release is a blend of high and low ryes sourced from Indiana and brought to proof with local limestone water. The Baltimore distillery itself has officially opened and soon the we'll expect to see whiskey born and raised there bottled for the market and with it the return of the fabled Maryland style. In the meantime the flagship is a solid drink that can find a way to fit in to just about any occasion that calls for whiskey with notes that include brown sugar, toasted vanilla, preserved cherries and baking spices.

The first time I had the good fortune to try this wonderful spirit was at the bar at the Sagamore Pendry hotel in Baltimore, taking a quick break from wheeling around town smashing crabs with hammers. I ordered one neat and was immediately taken with its lovely spiced nose, a hot yet balanced cinnamon and citrus core, and a long, toasted walnut and stick to your ribs brown sugar finish that had me re-energized and ready for more crab, possibly in cake form this time. A clever blend of two straight rye mash bills, the first high-rye, adding notes of orange and clove, and a low-rye, giving us caramel, honey and citrus peel. Aged 4 to 6 years in high-char American oak, and “proofed with limestone-filtered water from our spring house built in 1909, that represents our teams thoughtful approach to crafting a classic Maryland-style rye whiskey”
