Tasting Notes

The Espadin agaves for this batch from master mezcalero Berta Vasquez each aged for a minimum of 9yrs prior to harvest, nearly double the average bottling of Espadin these days from other producers. Naturally as a result the mezcal is more complex and full bodied than most with deep and wide ranging notes including smoky underbrush, peppery olive oils, avocado leaf, water chestnuts and lime zest. A rewarding, sipping Espadin.

Staff Pick Notes

Berta Vazquez learned to make mezcal from her grandparents, who turned to distilling to survive when the corn crop wasn't enough. She started bottling her own mezcal after her husband died and she was left to raise 5 children on her own. Mezcal may be a high-end, ritzy drink these days, but it's good to remember that its origins are humble, to put it mildly. Isn't that, though, one of the things we love about it--its authenticity, its small, hand-crafted production, the fact that there's an actual person behind the spirit inside? Berta's mezcals are exquisite, and you'll be wowed them all. This batch of espadin opens with a burst of soft, sweet smoke, then segues into caramel & floral notes, smokey green twigs and lime. Sip again and the order may change. It's a chameleon, constantly evolving, surprising and beguiling. Berta's magic.
