There is a reason 'Exception' is written into the label of this bottling. This tiny, independent artisan domaine is one of the very few that still carries on the tradition of extended cask aging of Pineau des Charentes, the famed sweet wine of Cognac. Aged in a tiny earthen cellar attached to the domaine in the heart of Segonzac, the epicenter of the best Grande Chmapagne Cognac production in the world, the Painturaud family takes great pride in their Pineau. This wine comes from a single cask from the 1989 vintage, bottled for us in 2019. The acidity is still bright and the notes are something like a cross between a great Sherry and an old Sauternes. Absolutely amazing, especially with an array of cheeses. Very limited one-time offer.

Pineau des Charentes is one of my favorite little secrets: a tiny corner of the spirits world where the grandeur and rarity of France's Cognac meets the pure pleasures of after dinner liqueur. The family-owned Guillon Painturaud estate makes this bottle by combining their new make Grande Champagne Cognac with the fresh, unfermented juice from the same grapes, then aging them together in barrel for a staggering 30 years. It tastes of tarte tatin, ripe mango, and roasted almonds, and marries the beauty of old brandy with the freshness of white wine. It's a rich drink, one you should only pour a glass of when you have the time to enjoy it. While you can certainly drink it either with or as dessert, this kind of Pineau will also pair gorgeously with blue cheese, foie gras, or even gnocchi with pumpkin and ricotta.
