Tasting Notes

One of the oldest rums coming out of Haiti, where the annual Angel's Share can be as high as 10%, the rum is unsurprisingly deep and concentrated. But the artful blending keeps this from being overly oaky and the rum really comes to life on the palate revealing layers of flavor and a dry spicy finish.

Staff Pick Notes

In local Haitain Creole Ak Zanj means "with angels," a term with considerable significance for a rum aged in the tropics. Caribbean angels are a thirsty bunch, sopping up as much as 10% per year, so you can imagine the concentration and intensity in one aged for 10 years. Having top notch raw materials to start with is key. This begins with low-yield sugar cane variety called Madame Mueze, which is grown organically (no herbicides or pesticides) and hand harvested by machete. Pure sugar cane juice is used, which is distilled in a 60-year-old Creole column still before being aged in Limousine oak. Because it's a rhum agricole, the flavors are focused, the body lean. Aromas of caramel and creme brulee are followed by honey, forest floor and caramel that finishes completely dry.The angels have excellent taste.
