I haven’t tasted a whiskey from the Barrell line up that has disappointed me yet, but this rye is really something special. The aromas: dried peaches and mangoes, leather, nutmeg, vanilla, and the warmth of grain and wood. Enticing. Intriguing. Unique. The flavor profile: Expressive. Exuberant. Bright stone fruit, heather, honey, baked bread. Intricate yet well integrated. I recommend drinking this with a single, regular-sized ice cube. The style of this independent blending outfit doesn’t hold back when it comes to the ABV, and the dilution really allows the magic of this complex creation to shine. Barrell’s motto is ‘raise your spirits’ but they are raising the bar on innovative American whiskies at the same time.
