Tasting Notes

Lovely lithe red fruit, with floral aromas on the nose and a delicious savory finish. An elegant Pinot Noir that shows the excellent terroir driven wines coming out Central Otago on the South Island. Burn Cottage is a 24 hectare estate, farmed biodynamically. The vineyard is owned by the Sauvage family which also owns the celebrated Koehler Ruprecht estate in the Pfalz region of Germany. They recruited Ted Lemon from Littorai wines in California to be their winemaker. The result is a stunning, well-crafted wine.

Staff Pick Notes

What a pretty wine this is! And with uniquely intertwined oenological and viticultural roots to boot. The vineyard is owned by the Sauvage family, also owners of Koehler Ruprecht in the Pfalz. Their winemaker is Ted Lemon, one of my favorites from California. Ted’s experience draws from years spent in Burgundy under the tutelage of estates including Dujac, G. Roumier and Roulot. Both the Sauvages & Lemon believe that wine is not made from fruit, but from the character offered by individual parcels of land where grapes are grown. This isn’t the fanciest bottling from the winery, but one could easily be fooled by its quality. The silky texture & judicious oak allow the purity of the grapes to shine. If you aren’t too familiar with New Zealand reds or Lemon’s winemaking philosophy, buy this bottle! I bet it won’t be the last time you do.

Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir,...

New Zealand

Over the past two decades, this tiny island nation has demonstrated that its winemaking ability extends well beyond excellent Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir has found an ideal climate here, as have Riesling and Chardonnay. The relatively cool weather of the South Island (and the southern regions of the North Island) provides the climate that these grapes require in order to develop the right acidity...
