Tasting Notes

Remember the words Empire Rye. This is the first official release and most certainly won't be the last. And if the whisky gets better than this over time it will no doubt be one of the most sought after the world over. Made from 100% malted rye grown on the distillery's own farm as well as their neighbor's, the grains are floor malted, fermented in wood vats and slowly distilled in hand hammered direct fire pot stills. Aged for a minimum of two years, the whisky is bottled at 48% ABV. With a tremendous potential to age this spirit is already packed with so many exciting flavors. At once sweet and spicy, fruity and savory, earthy and floral this special rye will have you captivated from the outset and will leave you satisfied long after the finish.

Staff Pick Notes

People prefer the genuine article. We’re crestfallen when we discover what we thought was real was actually a guided tour cardboard cutout. You can visit lots of distillery visitor centers that will dazzle and distract you from the fact that their whiskey isn’t that much different from the masses out there. Soon it becomes a depressing song and dance routine. Coppersea, however, is making something real and unique. Growing and malting their own rye makes for great young whiskey now and will pay in dividends when stocks get older. Today, the whiskey has surprising complexity and grace. Powdered sugar, fresh bread, dried flowers, creamy malt, and charred wood smoke. This is no cheap trick. This is hard work. This is genuine Rye whiskey.
